STEP ONE:
Everyone go check out the Play Mat. It's our virtual table, and everyone's "seating" actually makes a difference. Imagine there are index cards between each pair of players. One index card per pair of players will represent a Relationship between the both of you. By the end of Setup, there will be an additional index card as well, representing a Need, Object, or Location. We need at least one of each for the table, and it's recommended additional elements be Needs, since they drive the story more than stuff does.
STEP TWO:
Now imagine there are 2 white dice and 2 black dice per player. I'm going to roll them all. What happens then is we'll go around the table and take turns assigning one die to a Relationship Category or Subcategory in the Main Street Playset.
Reagan grew up in the smallest town, and he's played before, so Reagan, assign the first die to a Relationship!
When you do this, feel free to bandy about ideas you're having and why you're picking what you're picking. Like, "I'm picking Crime because I definitely want Dave and Adam to have some sort of shady shit going on" or "I really liked the tv show the Americans, maybe we can assume this subcategory might bring in some weird espionage angle?"
Character ideas might start to develop as we do this, which is how it's supposed to work. Jump in here on the thread, because I would like to track all the choices here even if we're duplicating a little effort from the google doc.
Also, keep in mind that you do not have to keep adding elements to existing relationships until they are done. While I assigned the broad relationship to Adam & Robert's relationship, Robert does not need to finalize it; he can assign whatever he likes.
Here's some banter between Robert and myself. It's important not to get too far into who exactly you're playing quite yet, but it's good to know where everyone's head is at.
My plan is to, if at all possible, play the kinda dumb guy who is by law mandated to be part of every caper.

and it's like "why do you rent from there, PersontoBeNamedLater? It's so... grimy."
"Maybe, but the customer service is really nice and they'll order it if they don't have it."
video stores are dens of iniquity.
well, we can make _anywhere_ a den of iniquity. ??

Agreed. A lot will change between now and when we are ready to start based on how we work to integrate all the elements that are ultimately selected, so don't get too set on a character idea yet. I know its a strange concept for a standard RPG player to do, but its the right approach! That being said, all the ideas tossed out above are 100% on brand!
Mike, you should have full edit privileges now for the play mat google doc. Sorry about that, I got your email address from Robert and promptly forgot to add you to the editors.
I choose (again) 4 = Romance for the relationship between Dave and Adam. Adam now appears to be a lothario of sorts, or perhaps someone we ALL want to get with!
My name is Tammy Lee, and I was conceived in an IROC-Z Camaro to the sweet sounds of Motley Crüe. I don't think anything anyone could choose from this point on could really mess with that. hehe.
Now that we've been around the table once, and at Reagan's request, I'm updating the charts above with the additional Needs, Objects, and Locations chart. We need one of each, and I'm gonna recommend we need two Needs for the table.
