Vercetti's crew draws their weaponry as Brian closes in on the scene. He draws down on Marco, putting two well-aimed shots into the goon's right leg. Marco drops to his knees, grimacing in pain as Angelo opens up Vercetti's shirt, stabbing him in the heart with the andrenaline.
Jess watches the display of medical prowess, seeing Vercetti's dazed eyes go wide open with the injection. There's a pretty good chance the gangster will survive if Angelo isn't stopped.
Cloak & Broadsword - Chapter 3: Breakfast with Mr. Vercetti
Upon seeing Angelo's life saving effort of Tommy, Ayumi and Jess go about making it that much more difficult to revive the dying mafioso.
Jess does a low-crawl over to the cafe table, picking up a knife and winging it at Angelo's back. The knife impales itself into the doctor's shoulderblade, causing a brief yet painful wince of pain from Angelo. Ayumi takes some cover from the oncoming goon barrage, firing a tight pattern of akimboed bullets at Angelo and turning his left arm into hamburger. The doctor is still up, but he is in almost in as much need for medical attention as his patient. He cries out to Tommy's crew,
"Danny, (the third previous unnamed goon) where the hell is our back-up? Call them in NOW!"
The goon ducks down calling on his radio as he moves to cover Angelo and Tommy.
"Alert 1, the boss is down. Request immediate back-up!"
Danny spots Jess hunkering down below the other table, firing off a shot in her general direction. The bullet hits center-mass, glancing off a rib.
Marco and Lenny pull back towards Vercetti, Marco panic firing towards Brian and Lenny bursting with his MP-5 at Ayumi. She takes a cluster of 9mm slugs to her right shoulder, her armor absorbing most of the trauma.
Across the plaza and over in the canal, the man toting the SMG suddenly gets back in the speedboat gesturing for the pilot to pull away from the dock. Policeboat sirens and lights can be seen and heard in the near distance (coming from the lagoon) as the speedboat turns about and begins to accelerate out towards open water.
Coincidentally, Brian sees six Venetian policeman closing in on the plaza in three carts.

Brian looks down the metallic sights of his pistol, drawing a bead on Vercetti's head. Despite the raging gun battle before him, he remembers his training.
*Pwip*
The losing fight to keep the mobster alive is finally lost as Brian sends a 9mm round into Tommy's brainpain. The resulting hemmoraging and shattering of Vercetti's skull drains out on the cafe's marble tiling in sickening display of grey matter and blood.
"Oh shit!", Angelo exclaims as Vercetti's eyes roll back for one last time.
"They just killed the boss!"

Seeing Tommy go down for good, Jess scrambles out of the restaurant, motioning for Ayumi to follow her.

Ayumi follows, guns akimbo, and distinctly miffed at having her kill stolen.
You had one job, Ayumi: Kill Vercetti. You'll never live this down.

As the Polizia Municipale close in on the plaza, all related parties decide a tactical withdrawal is in order. Jess and Ayumi head for Ivan's boat with Brian fading back towards Carla's.
The police seem to taking an active interest in Brian, since afterall, they saw him firing off rounds into the crowded cafe. One cart heads directly towards him as the other two enter the plaza, the policemen spreading out and radioing for back-up.
Upon seeing the police, Vercetti's crew break off further attack against Jess & Co. favoring their our survival. They begin backpeddling into the city, shooting a barrage of suppressive fire at the police who then return fire.
In the canal...
Hearing a new round of gunfire break out in the plaza, Carla anxiously waits for something to happen, stashing Jess' MP-7 in case the police start snooping. Moments later, she sees up ahead Ayumi and Carla running towards where the mystery boat had been.
Both agents see that Ivan and their ticket out of Venice is currently speeding away towards the open waters of the lagoon, passing right past the police boats as they enter the canalway.

Analysis: Must catch Liz. Shit. Carla? Hope endures!
Ayumi speeds ahead, her legs pounding against the ancient Venician flagstones, and hops deftly into Carla's boat.
"Start the motor, Carla!" The engine revs up as Jess slides into place. Leaving the driving to Carla, Ayumi reloads her pistols.

Jess grabs her MP7 from the seat, eyes it with obvious glee, then smiles at Carla.
"Thanks. I owe you one."

The police dismount from their cart, pointing their sidearms at Brian. They yell at him,
Non si muova! Cada la vostra arma! Metta il vostro sopra delle mani la vostra testa!
He's not quite sure what the hell they just said, but Brian's seen enough cop movies to gather they're not asking for donations to the Fraternal Order of Police. Brian lowers his weapon, then takes off towards the canal. One of the policeman chases after him on foot as the other gets back in the cart's driver seat, accelerating in Brian's direction.

Artis follows Ivan's boat out into the lagoon. It appears to be heading out then makes an abrupt 90 degree turn towards the shoreline. He extends the car's digital periscope for a good looksee of the situation. Ivan's boat is approaching a nearby dock where a young lady impatiently waits for his arrival, jesturing the "Let's go! Let's go!" motions.
"This is Goose, my contact's taken a sharp right and is picking up a woman. Should be able to see her from where you are in a few seconds... am going to continue pursuit, weapons armed and standing by."
Jess lays down a line of suppressive fire on the copkart. It's not enough to take the driver or the vehicle out of commission, but it does buy time for Brian...who now has only one cop to deal with instead of two.
The cop attempts to grapple Brian but only manages to get ahold of his jacket. He slows Brian down but otherwise does no appreciable harm to him.
Over in the lagoon, Artis watches as Ivan's boat pulls up to the dock with the aforementioned female jumping aboard before it comes to a full stop.

Brian stiff-arms the cop and elbows him in the gut for good measure. Free from his captor, he makes a mad dash for the safety of the ladies onboard the boat.
Carla picks up on the soldier's intentions, shoving off and preparing for a quick getaway. Nearing the boat and the cops hot on his tail, Brian's combat boot hits a slick spot on the dock marring his heroic escape with a less-than elegant header into the murky canal waters.

Jess watches Brian's flight with a hopeful look, but as soon as he plummets, she flinches a bit. Firing off more supressive fire with one hand, her left arm reaches for a life-preserver with a rope attached to it. She pauses fire momentarily, then throws the preserver towards Brian.
"Hold on !"
"Hold on !"
As soon as Brian gets ahold of the life preserver, Carla guns the boat's engine, tearing through the canal and putting some distance between her and the not-too-distant police boats.
Brian grabs the life preserver and gives Jess the thumbs-up as she fires her MP-7, keeping the onshore cops heads down.
*Cue James Bond escape music*
With Brian in tow, Carla throttles up the boat just as the two policeboats enter the canalway. They form a diamond shape, attempting to cut off access to open water.

Jess reloads her MP7, then takes aim again.
"Ayumi, try and reel Brian in!"
That said, she starts firing single shots at the closest boat's engines.

Ayumi fishes the waterlogged Brian out of the murky canal as the spent clip of Jess' MP-7 drops out the bottom of her weapon. It skitters across the boat's while she pops in a fresh magazine. Lock and loaded, her SMG barks at the policeboat, punching holes into its hull. The policemen onoboard respond in kind with a flurry of small arms fire as Carla closes the distance between them.
Bullets ricochet off the boat's hardwood paneling, one round taking a chunk out of the port-bow and another finding a home in Jess' clavicle. The pain is searing hot but the imminent collision takes precedent over her grievous injury.

A sucking chest wound is God's way of telling you to slow down...
Jess drops to the floor, then crawls towards the requisite first aid kit from her bag and begins to patch herself up as good as possible.

Carla guns the boat's engine attempting to get up as much speed as possible on the approach. The policemen see what she's about to do and procede to jump overboard shouting Italian obscenities as they go under.
The boat's upward trajectory is pitched at a horrible angle by the police's diamond formation, sending Carla & Co. into a precarious and neigh-uncontrollable ascent.
Carla holds fast to the boat's controls as Jess and Ayumi clutch the boat's tie-off rails, preventing them from an untimely bath in the lagoon.
No sooner does Brian climb aboard the boat is he propelled once again into the murky waters.
Aw hell! Not again...
Fortunate for him, he was still holding on to the life preserver.
The watercraft lands a good 60ft beyond the abandoned policeboats, its hull smacking down with an unsettling amount of undue force. It's still in one piece but slowly taking water. The question being when not if it will sink.
